aru is a French restaurant run by a husband and wife in Toyohashi. Vegetables from named local farmers lead each plate, and meat or fish plays the supporting role. The kitchen works patiently with fire. Asparagus is grilled over charcoal. Kokonoe-kuri pumpkin is roasted for more than an hour and finished over a wood fire. Carrots spend two hours in the oven until they are soft enough to cut with a spoon. Even the meat main arrives with a pile of seasonal vegetables in place of a sauce.

Almost every reviewer says the vegetables are the best they have tasted. Diners mention the corn soup, the pumpkin, the tama-retasu (head lettuce) and the asparagus again and again. They also praise the Japanese natural-wine pairings, the house bread, the closing platter of fully ripe local fruit and the warm, unhurried service from the couple.

Criticism is limited. Several diners found portions light for big appetites, though bread is refilled. One found the pacing slow, and another thought the salt-only venison slightly gamey. A few rated dessert or the wine choices a notch below the rest. One 2023 diner felt the course was not worth the price.

There is a single omakase course, the same at lunch and dinner. Reviewers in 2025–2026 paid around ¥15,400 for it, plus a 10% service charge. A short wine pairing ran about ¥4,500 and a full pairing ¥8,500–9,500. House kombucha cost ¥800 and the homemade bergamot liqueur ¥1,100. Reported totals were ¥18,000–19,910 for lunch with soft drinks and ¥28,380 for dinner with the full pairing. Typical spend is ¥15,000–19,999 at lunch and ¥20,000–29,999 at dinner.

Most reviewers rate it fair value or better, given the number of courses and how distinctive the cooking is. The dissent comes mainly from those who wanted larger portions.

  • Getting there: 6 minutes on foot from Toyohashi Station, about 112 m from Ekimae-Odori. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of the Yoshida Building, up a staircase. Signage is minimal, so use a map.
  • Booking: reservation only, so you cannot walk in. Book via the website, TORETA, Tabelog or by phone (0532-54-5518). Reviewers booked 1–1.5 months ahead. Solo bookings are accepted only from regulars, and groups of five or more are generally not accepted.
  • Timing: lunch and dinner start at a set time for all guests (doors 11:55 and 18:15). Arrive at least five minutes early and allow 2.5–3 hours.
  • Dietary needs: vegetarian, vegan and dairy-free diets cannot be accommodated. Allergies are handled where possible, but not when they overlap with the seasonal ingredients.
  • Children: welcome only if they sit and eat the same course as adults.
  • Payment: VISA, Mastercard, JCB, AMEX and Diners are accepted. Electronic money and QR payments are not accepted. A 10% service charge is added.
  • Seating: 6 seats, with no private rooms or private hire. The restaurant is non-smoking.
  • Parking: none on site. There are coin car parks nearby, but parking is not validated.
  • Drinks: a sommelier is on site. Non-alcoholic options include kombucha and fresh herb tea.
  • Closures: days off are irregular, and one reviewer found it unexpectedly closed twice. Confirm before travelling.
