A beloved neighbourhood eatery in Nagoya's Shinsakae district, Tatsumi draws long queues for its signature dish: large, soup-filled gyoza. It's a top destination for an inexpensive but high-quality meal.

Tatsumi is a small, unassuming eatery in Nagoya that has earned a major reputation for one thing: its exceptional gyoza. Unlike typical dumplings, these are large and packed with a hot, savoury broth that bursts out on the first bite, much like a xiaolongbao soup dumpling. The skin is thick and satisfyingly chewy, making for a unique and memorable texture.

While the pan-fried yaki-gyoza are the main draw, reviewers also consistently praise the steamed and boiled versions. The other star of the menu is the fried rice. Both the egg fried rice (tamago chāhan) and the char-siu pork version (chāshū chāhan) are singled out as being unusually delicious for such a casual spot, with many visitors calling them a must-order. Other izakaya-style dishes like meat shumai and karaage fried chicken are considered solid choices to accompany a beer.

The restaurant's popularity is its main drawback. Expect to wait, often for 20 to 60 minutes or more during peak dinner hours. The small dining room fills up quickly, and popular items like the gyoza can sell out before closing. Reviewers note that the gyoza are made without garlic in the filling, with garlic provided on the table as an optional condiment.

Tatsumi offers excellent value. Reviewers in recent years paid around ¥600 for a plate of five pan-fried or steamed gyoza, ¥650 for egg fried rice, and ¥800 for the char-siu fried rice. A gyoza and fried rice set was reported to be around ¥1,350. While the official average spend is under ¥1,000, a satisfying meal for two often comes to ¥2,000–¥3,000.
