Chuka Soba Goryu is a small, counter-only shop in Kure that has become a pilgrimage site for one dish: Kure reimen (中華そば・冷麺 呉龍), a style of cold ramen unique to this port city. What sets it apart is the combination of ingredients: flat, ribbon-like noodles served in a chicken-based broth that hits a distinctive balance of sweet, sour, and a final kick of spice. The dish is almost always ordered with large, juicy wontons that have a noticeable sweetness, creating a flavour profile reviewers consistently say is unlike any other ramen in Japan.
The overwhelming favourite is the wonton-topped cold noodles. Diners praise the slippery, slurpable texture of the flat noodles, which carry the complex broth perfectly. The balance of sweetness from the wontons, acidity from vinegar, and heat from chili oil is a frequent highlight. The shop's quick service and the popular side dish of fried rice (焼めし) also receive regular commendations.
The shop's popularity comes with drawbacks. Long queues, often in the sun, are standard. With only around 11 counter seats, it's not suited for groups. A few diners have noted occasional inconsistencies, with noodles sometimes being too soft or the soup not cold enough. The signature wontons can also sell out before closing time, so an early arrival is recommended.
Despite its fame, prices are reasonable. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥1,000 for a regular bowl of wonton reimen and ¥1,100 for a large. A bottle of beer was about ¥600. Most consider it excellent value for such a distinctive and well-executed local specialty.
