Momiji Do Honten (紅葉堂 本店) is the shop that invented age-momiji, a now-famous Miyajima specialty. It takes the traditional maple-leaf-shaped momiji manju cake and deep-fries it to order. The result, served hot on a stick, is a snack with a uniquely satisfying texture: a thin, exceptionally crisp batter giving way to a warm, soft, castella-like cake inside.
Visitors consistently praise this textural contrast. The classic fillings, such as smooth koshian (red bean paste) and rich custard cream, are the most popular and highly recommended. Other options like chocolate and a "rare cheese" filling also have their fans. Despite the queues that often form, service is efficient, with a ticket machine system that keeps the line moving quickly. Many consider the snack good value, with reviewers in 2024–2026 paying around ¥250 for a single fried cake or about ¥500 for a set with a drink.
While overwhelmingly popular, a few minor points are worth noting. Some of the novelty fillings, like Setouchi lemon, can be divisive. A handful of guests found the cakes a little oily, especially if eating more than one. Service is generally fast and functional, but a few visitors have reported staff as being brusque. As it's a popular spot, be aware that certain flavours can sell out towards the end of the day.
