Shintenchi Micchan (新天地 みっちゃん) is a landmark destination for one of Hiroshima's most famous dishes: okonomiyaki. What sets it apart is its classic, layered construction, all prepared on a massive teppan grill in full view of the diners. The process is part of the experience: a thin crepe base is topped with a mountain of steamed cabbage, followed by a layer of soba or udon noodles crisped up on the grill. Watching the chefs expertly assemble each dish is a spectacle in itself.

Guests consistently praise the generous portions and the balance of flavours. The most frequently recommended dish is the Special Deluxe (特製デラックス), which comes loaded with fresh squid, shrimp, and crispy squid tempura (ikaten). Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥1,700–¥1,800 for this signature plate. The crispy texture of the fried soba noodles is another highlight. The typical spend for lunch or dinner is between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999 per person, with a draft beer costing around ¥650. The value for money is widely considered excellent.

The restaurant's popularity means there are a few things to be aware of. Long queues are common, with waits of 15 to 60 minutes during peak hours. The open kitchen also means the smell of cooking will likely cling to your clothes. While most feedback is overwhelmingly positive, some guests have noted small extra charges for toppings like mayonnaise (around ¥40) or extra green onions (around ¥100).

  • Getting There: Shintenchi Micchan is a 5-minute walk from Hacchobori Station on the Hiroshima Electric Railway.
  • Reservations: Walk-ins are standard and booking is not required, but expect to queue. Limited reservations are accepted by phone for some weekday evenings, but not during peak holiday seasons like Golden Week or Obon.
  • Payment: Cash is strongly recommended. Credit cards and electronic money are not accepted, though QR code payments like PayPay and au PAY are available.
  • Seating: The restaurant has 25 seats, including counter seating with a view of the grill and a few tables. There are no private rooms.
  • Practical Notes: Portions are very large; one okonomiyaki can often be shared between two people. Staff are often described as helpful and multilingual, and English menus may be available. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
  • Children: Children are welcome.
  • Parking: There is no dedicated parking.
