In a quiet corner of Kobe's Suidosuji shopping street, Kanmidokoro Akachaya (甘味処 あかちゃ家) occupies an old house, preserving a retro Showa-era atmosphere. This teahouse is a local favourite for classic Japanese sweets, earning a spot in Tabelog's 2023 list of the top 100 traditional sweet shops in Western Japan. The focus is on handmade quality, from the house-made anko (sweet red bean paste) to the firm, chewy kanten (agar jelly) and warabimochi.
Guests consistently praise the texture and flavour of the desserts. The anmitsu (a chilled dessert of jelly, fruit, and sweet paste) and the tofu cream parfait are frequently highlighted for their high-quality components. In summer, the main draw is the kakigori (shaved ice), known for its fluffy texture and creative flavours like coconut milk, fresh strawberry, and classic Uji-kintoki (matcha and red bean). Reviewers also love the weekday lunch set, an omusubi teishoku featuring black-rice onigiri and numerous small side dishes, which is considered both filling and a great bargain. Polite service completes the pleasant experience.
The shop's popularity, especially in summer, means visitors should be prepared for long waits on weekends, with queues sometimes exceeding an hour. Popular items like warabimochi can sell out. As orders are prepared meticulously one by one, service can feel slow during peak times. The small interior is not well-suited for strollers.
Prices are very reasonable, with most reviewers spending under ¥1,000. Recent visitors paid around ¥730 for the Akachaya Original Parfait, ¥700 for an anmitsu and warabimochi set, and between ¥700 and ¥800 for kakigori. The weekday lunch set is typically priced around ¥800–¥900, representing excellent value for a handmade meal.
