In a small shop in Kobe's Tarumi district, marzi-pan (marzi-pan) is a one-person operation turning out some of the area's most sought-after bagels. The owner uses a long-fermentation, boil-then-bake method that results in a uniquely dense, heavyweight bagel with an intense, mochi-like chew that has earned it a cult following.

Guests consistently praise the extraordinary cost performance and the sheer variety. Savoury options like beef-stew or croque-monsieur bagels are packed with filling, while sweet versions feature combinations like fig or pineapple and cheese. Many reviewers note that a single bagel is substantial enough for a full meal. The value is a key draw, with reviewers recently paying just ¥160 for a beef-stew bagel and ¥100 for a plain one. Most speciality items are priced between ¥150 and ¥170.

The bakery's popularity means it has its challenges. Items sell out very early, often by late morning or noon, so an early arrival is essential. The shop itself is tiny, fitting only five or six people, and some visitors have found the owner's service to be brisk or even brusque as he manages the entire operation alone. The bagels are best eaten the same day, though many customers buy extras to freeze.

  • Getting There: The shop is a short walk from JR Sanyo Tarumi Station, on the north side. It's in the same building as the Kobayashi Dental Clinic.
  • Booking & Queues: Reservations are not available. It is essential to arrive at or soon after the 10:00 opening time. Expect a queue, as popular items sell out quickly.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Seating: Take-out only. There is no seating available.
  • Parking: No dedicated parking is available.
