Motomachi Santos (元町サントス) is a portal to Japan's Showa era, a classic kissaten (traditional coffee shop) that has been serving locals and visitors in Kobe's Motomachi shopping arcade since 1960. Its enduring appeal lies in its dedication to a simple, perfectly executed menu, headlined by its famous hotcakes and custom deep-roast coffee.

The star of the show is the house hotcake set. Two thick, fluffy pancakes are cooked to order on an iron griddle, arriving golden-brown with a generous knob of butter and maple syrup. Reviewers consistently praise their nostalgic flavour and satisfying texture. The coffee, a special charcoal-roast blend from Hagiwara Coffee, is strong and low in acidity, designed to complement the sweet hotcakes. While the classic butter hotcakes are the most popular, variations with ogura (sweet red bean paste) or marron are also highly recommended. Other popular choices include the generous morning sets and mini-sandwich sets, as well as classic kissaten fare like puddings and parfaits.

The shop's popularity means queues are common, especially on weekends, and service can sometimes feel slow during peak hours. While a few outliers mentioned minor issues, the overwhelming consensus is one of nostalgic charm and quality. Reviewers recently paid around ¥1,100 for a classic hotcake set, with the ogura version costing between ¥1,200 and ¥1,400. Morning sets are considered excellent value at around ¥700–¥750, and a single coffee is about ¥550–¥600. Most find the prices fair for the generous portions and classic atmosphere.
