Tanikawa Beikokuten (谷川米穀店) is an institution in Kagawa, the heartland of udon, with a reputation built on a single, disciplined dish. The shop serves only freshly made udon noodles, presented without broth. You choose your portion size (one or two balls of dough) and whether you want them hot or cold, then season the bowl yourself at the table with soy sauce, vinegar, and the shop's famous house-made green-chili paste.

Reviewers almost universally praise the quality of the noodles themselves—thin, glossy, and perfectly springy, with a distinct wheat aroma. The cold version highlights their firm texture, while the hot version, often ordered with a raw egg to create a creamy kamatama-style dish, is praised for its pillowy softness. The addictive, spicy green-chili condiment is a consistent highlight, elevating the simple dish into a memorable ritual. The rustic, riverside mountain setting adds to the charm.

The main drawbacks are logistical. Long queues are common, and the shop closes as soon as the day's noodles sell out, often well before the official 1:30 PM closing time. The waiting area offers little shade, and seating inside is cramped and shared. A few visitors have noted uneven service from one staff member, but most find the experience efficient and charming.

Value is considered exceptional. Reviewers in 2024–2026 consistently reported paying around ¥250 for a small bowl with an egg, or ¥350 for a large bowl. Many guests order a second bowl (okawari), which is easily done without re-queuing, and still find the total cost remarkably low for the quality.

  • Booking: Walk-in only; reservations are not accepted. Arrive early, especially on weekends, to avoid disappointment as they close when sold out. Expect to queue.
  • Getting There: The location is remote. A car is the most practical option, with parking available nearby. A bus runs from Kotohira Station, but the schedule is extremely limited and risky for a return trip.
  • Payment: Cash only. You pay at the counter after eating by telling the staff what you had.
  • Menu: The menu is simple: hot or cold udon in a small (1-ball) or large (2-ball) size, with an optional raw egg topping. Soba is sometimes available in winter.
  • Seating: There are about 20 seats at shared tables.
  • Rules: Photography of other customers inside the restaurant is prohibited.
  • Family: Children are welcome.
  • Smoking: The restaurant is non-smoking, but a designated smoking area is provided outside.
