Teuchi Udon Tamura (手打うどん たむら) is an institution in Kagawa, the home of Sanuki udon. It's celebrated for one thing above all: its incredibly thick, hand-cut noodles with a pronounced chewy bite, or 'koshi'. These are served in the classic self-service style, where you collect your noodles from a boiling pot and assemble your own meal. The broth is a simple, clear dashi with a distinct flavour of iriko (dried sardines), designed to complement, not overpower, the wheat flavour of the noodles.

Guests consistently praise the unique texture of the noodles, often described as twisted, firm, and satisfyingly chewy. Popular choices include hot or cold 'kake' (noodles in broth), 'shoyu' (with soy sauce), and 'kamaage' (straight from the boiling water with a dipping sauce). While some staff are noted for being brusque, the owner is often described as characterful and chatty. The low prices are a major draw, with many reviewers also recommending the 'Olive-pork' topping for its flavour.

Be aware that the experience is authentically rustic. Some visitors find the shop's interior, with its dusty surfaces and basic toilets, to be unkempt. A few reviews also mention inconsistent food temperature or quality depending on who is working. However, for most, this is part of the charm and a small price to pay for the outstanding noodles.

The value is exceptional. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥250–¥300 for a small bowl and ¥350–¥400 for a large one. Toppings like fried tofu ('age') cost about ¥60, while the popular Olive-pork topping was noted at around ¥230. It's easy to have a full, high-quality lunch for well under ¥1,000.

  • Reservations: Reservations are not accepted; this is a walk-in only establishment. Expect to queue, and arrive early as the shop often sells out and closes before 1:00 PM.
  • Getting There: Access is by car or taxi. It is a 30-minute walk from Sue Station. A large parking lot with 30 spaces is available, located a short distance from the shop itself.
  • Payment: The restaurant accepts AMEX cards, WAON electronic money, and QR code payments (PayPay, d Barai, Rakuten Pay, au PAY).
  • Service Style: This is a full self-service restaurant. You will take your noodles from the pot, add broth and toppings yourself, and pay after you eat. The system is explained in Japanese, but staff will usually guide you if you hesitate.
  • Seating: There are about 15 counter seats, with additional seating available in an adjacent warehouse.
  • Smoking: Smoking is permitted in a designated outdoor area.
