Yamauchi Udon Ten (山内うどん店) is a celebrated, old-fashioned udon shop tucked away in the mountains of Kagawa. Its defining feature, praised by countless visitors, is its commitment to tradition: the hand-cut noodles are boiled in a large, wood-fired (薪) cauldron, a technique that imparts a unique character you won't find elsewhere. This rustic method, combined with a powerfully assertive broth made from iriko (dried sardines), creates a truly memorable bowl.

Guests consistently rave about the simple kake udon preparations, especially the 'hiya-atsu' (cold noodles in hot broth). The broth itself is a highlight—clear, deeply savoury, and so good many people drink it straight from the bowl. The noodles are firm, springy, and pleasingly irregular due to being cut by hand. The friendly, chatty staff and the nostalgic, mountain-hut atmosphere add to the charm, making many reviewers want to return immediately for a second bowl.

Be prepared for a rustic experience in every sense. The hand-cut nature of the noodles means thickness and texture can vary from batch to batch. Popular items like tempura often sell out early and may be served cold. Its popularity also means you should expect queues during peak times, and the shop closes as soon as the day's noodles are gone, which can be well before the official closing time.

Value is exceptional. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying just ¥250 for a small bowl of kake udon, with toppings like fried tofu (o-age) or fish cake tempura (chikuwa-ten) costing around ¥150 each. A satisfying meal for two often costs less than ¥1000, making it a standout bargain for such high-quality, handmade food.
