Chimoto Ekimae doori ten (ちもと 駅前通り店) is a long-standing sweets shop in Hakone that has built its reputation on one iconic creation: the Yumochi. This is not a typical mochi. Reviewers consistently describe it as having a uniquely soft, almost marshmallow-like texture, achieved by using a white mochi batter combined with meringue. Studded with small cubes of sweet yokan (bean jelly) and infused with a subtle yuzu fragrance, it offers a flavour and mouthfeel that many visitors find unforgettable.

The Yumochi is the undisputed star, praised for its delicate balance and ethereal softness. Guests also enjoy pairing it with green tea at the shop's small café space. In summer, the seasonal matcha shaved ice is another popular choice. While the Yumochi is the main draw, other traditional sweets like the Hachiri monaka and warabi-mochi are available and make for excellent local souvenirs.

A few minor points appear in reviews. Some find the Yumochi a little too sweet for their palate. It can also be messy to eat on the go due to its soft texture and dusting of powder. The most significant consideration for those buying gifts is its short shelf life—it lasts only about four days and comes with specific instructions not to refrigerate it, which can complicate plans to take it home on a long journey.

Prices are very reasonable for a specialty of this quality. Reviewers in recent years paid around ¥290 for a single Yumochi, with a three-piece set costing about ¥940 and a five-piece box around ¥1,550. A Yumochi and green tea set at the café is approximately ¥650, while seasonal shaved ice costs between ¥750 and ¥850. Most agree it offers excellent value for a unique local taste.
