For over fifty years, Coquelicot Crepe Ten (コクリコクレープ店) has been a Kamakura institution, serving simple, elegant French crepes from a small counter-front stand. What sets it apart is the texture: each crepe is cooked to order, resulting in a thin sheet that’s perfectly crisp at the edges (a texture the Japanese call paripari) while remaining soft and slightly chewy in the centre, almost like mochi.
This focus on the crepe itself means that the simplest toppings are often the most highly recommended. Both Japanese and international visitors consistently praise the classic butter-sugar and lemon-sugar crepes as the definitive items to order. The experience of watching your crepe being made right in front of you is part of the charm. While these classics are the main event, other options like cream and chocolate are also available. Some guests, accustomed to crepes piled high with fillings, find the toppings here a bit light, and a few have noted the service is efficient rather than overtly warm.
Prices are very wallet-friendly, making it an excellent value snack. Reviewers in recent years paid around ¥400 for the signature lemon-sugar or butter-sugar crepes, and about ¥550 for a cream-chocolate version. Most orders fall comfortably under ¥1,000.
- Getting There: The stand is located a short walk (about 470m) from Kamakura Station.
- Booking: Walk-in only; reservations are not accepted. There is often a queue, but it tends to move quickly, with waits typically between 5 and 30 minutes.
- Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted. You purchase a ticket from a vending machine before joining the queue.
- Seating: There is a small indoor seating area and a few benches outside, but it's primarily a takeaway spot for eating on the go.
- Good to Know: Children are welcome. Staff may ask you not to film them while they work. If you eat outside, be aware of the local black kites (tori), which have been known to snatch food from unsuspecting visitors.
