Ramen Sugita Ya Honten (ラーメン 杉田家 本店) opened in 1999 as the first direct branch of Yoshimuraya, the Yokohama shop that created iekei ramen: a pork-bone and soy broth enriched with chicken fat. It has made Tabelog's regional "Tabelog 100" ramen list every year since 2018. The doors open at 5am, so breakfast ramen is part of the routine, and from the counter you watch the cooks work the stockpots and drain the noodles.

Most reviewers praise the soy-forward broth with fragrant chicken oil, which they describe as bold but balanced. They also like the chewy Sakai Seimen noodles, which many order firm (katame). Other recurring favourites are the soup-soaked nori wrapped around rice, the smoky chashu and the mabushi-don, a small rice bowl with sweet soy pork and onion. Ginger and garlic on the counter let you adjust the bowl as you eat.

The complaints are consistent too. Several 2026 reviews describe brusque staff at the entrance, loud chatter, mixed-up preference orders and dirty counters. Some bowls were uneven, with soft noodles, dry chashu or a thin soup. Saltiness is a frequent complaint even at normal strength, and a few reviewers felt the bowl did not justify the queue. The meal is fast-paced.

Prices are low. In 2026 reviewers paid around ¥960–970 for a regular ramen, ¥1,130 for a medium and ¥1,430 for a large chashu-men. The wafu shin-sugita ramen with bonito, shiso and plum cost ¥1,080, mabushi-don or rice ¥200 and a seasoned egg ¥130. Lunch or dinner typically comes to under ¥1,000, or a little more with extras. Reviewers repeatedly call this remarkable value, and portions are big: a German couple could not finish a medium.

  • Getting there: about 3 minutes on foot (216 m) from Shin-Sugita Station on the JR Negishi Line. Walk straight towards Isogo Station. The shop has a red sign and is just before the traffic light.
  • Booking: reservations are not accepted, so simply walk in and queue. Waits of 30–90 minutes are normal at almost any hour, and reviewers report more than 50 people waiting before the 5am opening. You may not save places in the line.
  • Ordering: buy a ticket at the machine before you queue. The machine accepts ¥10,000 notes. Staff ask about noodle firmness, flavour strength and oil while you wait. Ask for usu-me if you want less salt. The soup is served very hot.
  • Payment: cash only. Credit cards, electronic money and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Seating: 15 counter seats, with no private rooms and no private hire.
  • Children: welcome.
  • Smoking: non-smoking inside, with an ashtray outside.
  • Parking: none at the shop, but there is coin parking nearby.
  • Last orders: reviewers say the ticket machine stops around 21:50, and last orders may come earlier on busy days.
