In a quiet corner of Yokohama's Yamashitacho district, a single chef executes a highly controlled process centred on low-temperature frying. This technique results in pork that is unusually juicy and pink, encased in an airy, ivory-coloured batter that reviewers note stays crisp for minutes after serving. The restaurant uses premium pork brands like LYB and TOKYO X, which guests select when making their reservation.
Diners consistently praise the tenderness of the fillet (hire) and loin cuts, describing the texture as almost silk-like. The side dishes receive equal acclaim, particularly the glossy, perfectly cooked rice and a rich miso soup full of mushrooms. The experience is ritualistic, with the chef advising a specific eating order—from right to left for certain cuts—and a precise sequence where the tonkatsu is served first, followed by rice, and finally the miso soup.
This unique approach has its trade-offs. A few guests found the pork too rare for their taste or noted a strong pork flavour. The modest portions and lack of refills for rice or cabbage, combined with the high price, led a minority of reviewers to question the value. A typical meal costs between ¥10,000 and ¥14,999. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥8,900 for a 150g LYB loin set, and between ¥6,400 and ¥9,900 for rare-breed fillet sets.
For most, however, the exceptional craft and quality of the ingredients make Yoda a worthy special-occasion destination. The biggest hurdle is securing a seat, as reservations are released in limited monthly batches and sell out almost instantly.
- Booking: Strictly by online reservation only; seats are extremely limited and sell out fast. You must pre-order your cut of pork when booking. Walk-ins are not accepted.
- Age Restriction: Entry is restricted to guests aged 25 and older.
- Arrival: Arrive within 5 minutes of your reservation time. Arriving more than 10 minutes late is treated as a cancellation.
- Getting There: Yoda is a 6-minute walk from Nihon Odori Station or a 7-minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Station (both on the Minato Mirai Line).
- Payment: Credit cards (Visa, Master, JCB, Amex, Diners), electronic money (transportation IC cards like Suica, iD, QUICPay), and QR code payments (PayPay) are accepted.
- Seating: The restaurant has just 4 counter seats. The maximum party size is 2 people.
- Parking & Smoking: No private parking is available, but there are paid lots nearby. The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
