Ajari Mochi Honpo Kyogashi Tsukasa Mangetsu Honten is the main store for one of Kyoto's most famous traditional sweets, the Ajari Mochi (阿闍梨餅). While these treats are sold in department stores and stations, reviewers are unanimous that the experience of eating one fresh from the shop—often still warm—is far superior and the reason to visit.
The sweet itself has a unique texture: a thin, chewy, mochi-like skin made from rice flour, sugar, and egg is lightly grilled, giving it a satisfying bite. Inside is a generous filling of high-quality red bean paste (anko) from Tamba Dainagon azuki beans, which is praised for its well-balanced, grainy sweetness. For a rarer treat, the shop also sells a weekend-only sweet called Mangetsu, which uses a white bean paste filling and sells out quickly. The main critiques are minor: some find the filling a little sweeter than expected, and the most popular items can sell out early in the day.
The sweets are considered excellent value. Reviewers in recent years paid around ¥141 for a single Ajari Mochi and about ¥303 for the weekend-only Mangetsu. A 10-piece boxed set costs around ¥1,522. Most visitors spend under ¥1,000 for a few pieces to eat on the spot or take away.
