Ankyu (安久) is an exclusive kappo experience, seating just six guests at a counter in Kyoto's Miyagawasuji district. Here, chef Yozo Ueda personally prepares a multi-course menu that showcases his mastery of Kyoto-style cuisine. The foundation of his cooking is a remarkably deep and gentle dashi, which elevates every dish. Guests consistently praise the chef's flawless control of heat, particularly in the grilled fish and meat courses.

The menu is strictly seasonal, featuring rare and sought-after ingredients. Reviewers rave about courses like the winter 'koppe' crab, creamy shirako (cod milt), and luxurious Ise-ebi (spiny lobster). Other highlights frequently mentioned are the flavorful takikomi gohan (seasoned rice cooked with seafood) and the simple yet perfect dessert of kuri monaka (chestnut-filled wafer). The warm, attentive service from the chef and his team, along with thoughtful sake pairings, completes the experience.

While overwhelmingly praised, a small number of diners have found the price high for their expectations. Dinner costs are consistently reported in the ¥40,000–¥49,999 range per person. For those seeking a top-tier, special-occasion meal focused on technique and seasonality, Ankyu is considered to offer excellent value. However, it is not a destination for budget-conscious travellers.

  • Reservations: Essential. With only six seats, booking well in advance is required.
