In Kyoto's quiet Okazaki district, cheka (菓子・茶房 チェカ) has earned a loyal following for its inventive and well-executed pastries. A multi-year recipient of Tabelog's "Top 100 Cafes" award, it's known for two signatures in particular: a fluffy shaved ice, or kakigori, with a whole, rich custard pudding hidden inside (プリンのかき氷), and a distinctive donut-shaped tiramisu with a white chocolate shell.

Reviewers consistently praise the quality of the ingredients and the creativity of the desserts. The kakigori's texture and surprise pudding are frequent highlights, as is the originality of the tiramisu. Classic baked goods like cream puffs (choux cream), strawberry tarts, and roll cakes are also noted for being reliably delicious, and the coffee is considered a good pairing.

However, many visitors—both Japanese and foreign—report that the service can be cold or curt, with strict house rules that are firmly enforced. These can include a one-food and one-drink minimum for dining in, instructions on where to place bags, and restrictions on photography. While some guests have perfectly pleasant visits, others find the atmosphere unwelcoming.

For the quality on offer, prices are reasonable. Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥1,400 for the pudding kakigori, ¥550–¥560 for the tiramisu, and about ¥300 for a cream puff. Coffee is around ¥550–¥605, with a typical visit costing between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999. It's good value for dessert lovers, provided you're prepared for a potentially brisk service style.

  • Getting There: cheka is a 7-minute walk from Keage Station on the Tozai subway line, or a short walk from the "Hosshoji-cho" bus stop.
  • Booking: Walk-in only; reservations are not accepted. Queues are common, and popular items can sell out.
  • Seating: The small shop has a counter on the ground floor and a small tea room with tatami and table seating upstairs (16 seats total).
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • House Rules: Expect to order one food item and one drink per person to dine in. Staff may direct you where to sit and ask you to place bags in provided baskets. Photography is often prohibited.
  • Children: While the cafe is officially listed as family-friendly, some reviewers found the brisk service and strict rules challenging with small children.
  • Take-out: Available.
  • Parking: No dedicated parking, but coin-operated parking is available nearby.
  • Smoking: The entire premises are non-smoking.
