GRILL DEMI (グリル デミ) is a beloved Kyoto institution dedicated to yoshoku, or Japanese-style Western cuisine, with a laser focus on the hamburg steak. The main event is the signature Tan-shichū Hamburg (タンシチューハンバーグ): a juicy hamburger steak crowned with meltingly tender, slow-cooked beef tongue stew. It arrives bubbling furiously on a cast-iron plate, ensuring the house-made demiglace sauce stays hot to the very last bite.
Guests consistently praise the deep, slightly fruity flavour of the demiglace and the tenderness of the gyūtan (beef tongue). The hamburg itself is noted for its satisfying, meaty texture. Other popular choices include the Demi-tama Hamburg (topped with a fried egg), the Cheddar Cheese Hamburg, and add-ons like ebi fry (fried shrimp). Many international visitors also highlight the friendly staff and the availability of an English menu, making it an accessible choice.
The experience does come with a few practical considerations. The small dining room is often filled with a strong, smoky aroma from the sizzling plates, which can cling to clothes. Queues are common, and some reviewers have found the rich sauces heavier or saltier than anticipated. A few have also noted an occasional charred note in the sauce.
Despite this, most diners consider GRILL DEMI to be excellent value. Lunch sets were recently reported around ¥900–¥1,000, while the popular Tan-shichū Hamburg set costs about ¥2,200–¥2,300. Even at the higher end, the generous portions and quality of the signature dishes are widely seen as a great deal.
