A tiny, counter-only izakaya in Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward, serving refined small plates from the famed Shokudo Ogawa lineage. It's a rare chance to taste these signature dishes without a long reservation.

Hotel De Ogawa (オテルドゥオガワ) is a tiny, eight-seat counter that acts as a more accessible offshoot of the celebrated, reservation-only restaurant Shokudo Ogawa. It offers a rare opportunity to sample the Ogawa style of cooking a la carte, with dishes prepared right before your eyes from a short, changing blackboard menu. For many, this is the main draw: a taste of legendary cooking without the months-long wait.

Guests consistently praise the quality of the ingredients and the masterful execution. Standout dishes frequently mentioned include the savoury karasumi mochi (dried mullet roe with rice cake), freshly made ika shumai (squid dumplings), and the comforting jaco fried rice. Other favourites are the dashi-maki rolled omelette, saba (mackerel) sushi, and a signature pasta dish called 'Ore no Napolitan'. Portions are noted to be generous, and most diners feel the food represents excellent value for its quality.

However, visitors should be aware of several challenges. The restaurant has strict and sometimes confusing entry rules: reservations are not taken, and queueing is forbidden. Getting a seat is a matter of luck and timing. The staff can be taciturn and are said to favour regulars, and with a Japanese-only menu (often without prices), communication can be difficult for non-speakers. A small number of foreign visitors have reported being refused entry or feeling unwelcome.

Dinner typically costs between ¥10,000 and ¥14,999, though many reviewers reported paying around ¥7,000–¥11,000 per person. Specific dishes recently cost around ¥1,500 for saba sushi, ¥1,100 for four pieces of ika shumai, and ¥500 for dashi-maki.

  • Getting There: The restaurant is located in Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward, a short walk from Gion-Shijo Station. The entrance is unmarked and can be hard to find.
  • Reservations: Reservations are not accepted, and you cannot wait outside. Entry is walk-in only and depends entirely on seat availability. Not suitable for groups.
  • Seating: There are only 8 counter seats.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Language: The menu and service are in Japanese only.
  • Good to know: The restaurant is entirely non-smoking. Portions can be large, so it's wise to ask before ordering, especially for solo diners.
