This small counter in the food hall of Kyoto's Isetan department store is the most convenient place to buy one of the city's most distinctive sweets: the Ajari-mochi (阿闍梨餅). Invented by the main Mangetsu store, this confection has a unique texture that sets it apart. The outer layer is a thin, chewy skin made from rice flour and egg, with a moist, almost half-baked consistency. Inside is a dense but elegantly restrained sweet paste of high-quality Tanba Dainagon red beans.

Reviewers almost universally praise this signature texture and the balanced flavour. It's a popular and highly-regarded souvenir, and the ability to buy them individually allows you to try one before committing to a gift box. Recent visitors reported paying around ¥130–¥141 for a single piece, or ¥1,404 for a box of ten, making it an excellent value for its quality.

The shop's main drawback is its popularity. Queues of 10 to 20 people are common during peak hours, though the line moves quickly. A few reviews also mention that service can feel rushed or brusque. Most importantly, the ajari-mochi has a very short shelf life of only four to five days, a key factor to consider when buying them as gifts to take home.

  • Location: On the B1 basement floor of the JR Kyoto Isetan department store, which is directly connected to Kyoto Station.
  • Booking and Queues: Walk-ins are standard, but expect queues. To skip the line, you can reserve a timed pickup slot online.
  • Payment: Credit cards (VISA, Master, JCB, AMEX, Diners, UnionPay), electronic money, and QR code payments (including PayPay) are all accepted.
  • Service: This is a take-out counter only.
  • Age Restriction: Children are welcome.
  • Parking: No parking is available.
  • Smoking: The entire premises are non-smoking.
