For over 30 years, Nakae (なか栄) has been a fixture in its quiet Kyoto neighborhood, a testament to the enduring appeal of heartfelt, home-style cooking. Now run by the second generation of the founding family, this small izakaya elevates everyday dishes into memorable signatures, all served with a singular warmth and hospitality that keeps locals coming back.

The menu is built around fresh seafood, and reviewers consistently praise the quality. The sashimi platter is a highlight, noted for its freshness and generous, thick cuts. Beyond the classics, Nakae is known for inventive comfort food. The seafood gratin is a much-loved house special, as are the cream croquettes and seasonal tempura featuring ingredients like oysters or unagi (eel). Another unique creation is the 'golden curry', a rich Japanese curry topped with a fluffy fried dashimaki rolled omelette, which reviewers recently paid around ¥1,100 for.

The value is exceptional, particularly at lunchtime. The daily set lunch, which guests reported paying about ¥900 for, is considered one of the area's best deals. Dinner is also reasonably priced, with a typical spend of ¥4,000–¥4,999 for a satisfying meal. The only minor criticisms are that the small space can feel cramped and occasionally loud, and some note the older-style shared toilet.

  • Getting There: Nakae is about a 10-minute walk from Tanbaguchi Station in Shimogyo ward.
  • Reservations: Walk-ins are possible, but with only 15 seats, booking by phone is highly recommended, especially for dinner. The restaurant is not suited for large groups.
  • Payment: Please note this is a cash-only establishment. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR payments are not accepted.
  • Seating: There are 9 seats at the counter and a couple of small tables for a total of 15.
  • Smoking: Smoking is permitted throughout the restaurant.
  • Good to know: The popular lunch sets can sell out, so it's best to arrive early. Last orders for lunch are around 1:30 PM.
