A beloved 1950s basement kissaten near Sanjo in Kyoto, serving its own roasted coffee blends and famous old-fashioned donuts. By night, it transforms into a low-key bar, making it a local fixture.

Rokuyosha Chika ten (六曜社 地下店) is a time capsule of mid-century Japan, a genuine 1950s basement coffee shop, or kissaten, that has changed little since it opened. Located just off the busy streets of Kyoto, this cozy space with its dark wood, worn leather, and quiet jazz soundtrack serves as a coffee roastery by day and a quiet bar by night, offering a retreat into the city's Showa-era past.

Guests consistently praise the simple but perfectly executed classics. The main draw is the signature donut, served warm with a crisp exterior and a dense, nostalgic crumb, which pairs perfectly with the house-blend coffee, brewed by hand one cup at a time. Other simple sweets like pound cake and roll cake are also popular. In the evening, the menu shifts to a bar service, with guests enjoying a quiet whisky or brandy.

The cafe's popularity and small size mean it can feel cramped, and queues are common. With only 15 seats, the staff may ask you to wait even if a seat appears free. The famous donuts and cakes often sell out, sometimes well before closing, and service can be slow during peak hours.

Despite this, reviewers consider it excellent value. A donut recently cost around ¥250–¥300, with a cup of blend coffee priced at ¥600–¥750. A typical visit for coffee and a snack costs between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999, a modest price for such a carefully preserved piece of Kyoto's cultural history.

  • Getting There: It is a 1-minute walk from Keihan Sanjo Station. Look for the entrance leading down to the basement level.
  • Booking: Reservations are not accepted. Queues are common, so be prepared to wait.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Seating: There are 15 seats, including a counter and small tables. The space is narrow and not easily accessible for those with mobility issues.
  • Good to Know: The basement is strictly non-smoking. From 6:00 PM, the space operates as a bar. Popular items like donuts can sell out early.
