Shinrin Shokudo (森林食堂) is not just a curry shop; it's an experience orchestrated by its owner-chef. The main event is a daily, handwritten A/B menu offering intricate plates where several distinct curries are served together. This unique format allows diners to explore a spectrum of flavours in one meal, with each bite offering a new combination of textures and tastes from the abundant, carefully crafted toppings.

Guests consistently praise the depth and balance of the food, with signature creations like a rich oyster curry, a savoury bamboo-shoot (takenoko) keema, and various spinach and keema combinations earning special mention. The colourful, generous plating and the owner's warm, attentive service add to the appeal, all within an intimate interior designed to evoke a forest.

The restaurant's popularity comes with challenges. Reviewers consistently report long waits, both to get a seat and for the food to arrive, as the shop is often a one-person operation. Opening hours are irregular and popular items sell out, so arriving early is essential. The handwritten Japanese menu can be a hurdle for non-Japanese speakers, and a few visitors have found the complex, herbal spice profile divisive.

Despite the wait, most find it offers excellent value. Reviewers in 2024 paid around ¥2,300 for a mixed A/B plate and ¥2,100 for the A-set. A B-set with an 'angel shrimp' topping was noted at ¥2,500 plus a ¥500 topping fee. Typical spend is ¥2,000–¥2,999 for lunch and ¥4,000–¥4,999 for dinner.

  • Getting There: Shinrin Shokudo is a 10-minute walk from Nijo Station (JR San-in Main Line and Tozai Subway Line).
  • Booking & Queues: Walk-ins are the norm. Expect to queue; arriving 20-60 minutes before opening is recommended. After ordering, food can take 30-60 minutes to be served.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Menu: The menu is handwritten in Japanese cursive. A translation app is highly recommended, though the owner is known to be helpful.
  • Seating: The small restaurant has 22 seats, including a counter, tables, and a private tatami room.
  • Children: Children are welcome.
  • Parking: No dedicated parking is available, but there are paid parking lots nearby.
