Shokudo Miyazaki (食堂 みやざき) offers a whirlwind kappo experience at its lively 10-seat, L-shaped counter in Kyoto. A single chef orchestrates the evening, serving a rapid-fire omakase menu directly to guests. The atmosphere is energetic and unfussy, focusing on the performance of cooking and high-quality seasonal ingredients.
The menu is a parade of hits, with guests consistently praising a few standout dishes. The experience often begins with delicate starters like chawan-mushi with sea cucumber innards (konowata) and lily bulb, or hand-passed karasumi-mochi. The star, however, is often the tebasaki karaage: legendary hand-cut chicken wings, praised for being incredibly crisp and juicy. Other highlights include expertly simmered fish like kinmedai, theatrical dashi-rolled tamagoyaki, and a grand finale of three separate rice courses, which might include a rich TKG (egg over rice) and the signature 'miyacurry'.
While the food earns near-universal acclaim, practicalities can be challenging. The counter seating is tight and can be noisy when full. The main hurdle, however, is securing a reservation, which is notoriously difficult and often requires an introduction from a regular. Despite a listed dinner price of ¥10,000–¥14,999, reviewers in 2024–2026 more commonly reported paying ¥16,000 to ¥20,000 for the full omakase with drinks. Even at this price, most consider it exceptional value for the quality and sheer volume of food served.
