Since opening its doors in 1932, Smart Coffee (スマート珈琲店) has become a Kyoto landmark, preserving the atmosphere of a classic Showa-era kissaten. The ground floor café, with its dark wood panelling and uniformed staff, is dedicated to coffee and light fare, while the second floor serves heartier Western-style lunch sets. The main draw is the café's unwavering commitment to its two signature items: a deeply aromatic, house-roasted coffee and a legendary French toast.

Guests consistently praise the French toast, which is thick-cut, perfectly crisp on the outside, and custardy-soft within. Reviewers recently paid ¥800 for a single portion or ¥1,400 for a set with coffee. The house blend coffee itself (around ¥650) is another highlight. Other popular choices include the fluffy egg (tamago) sandwiches (around ¥900), classic baked custard pudding (pudding set ¥1,300), and hot-cakes (set ¥1,400).
