SUSHI KONDO (鮨 こんどう) offers an intimate and highly sought-after sushi experience from within a restored 120-year-old townhouse in Kyoto's Kita ward. The setting is serene and exclusive, with a single counter of just six seats. Chef Kondo's warm, unshowy hospitality sets the stage for a tightly controlled omakase that has earned a devoted following.

Guests consistently praise the outstanding quality and variety of the seasonal fish, with highlights including sea bream from Akashi, delicate white shrimp, rich uni from Yura, and fatty otoro. The nigiri are noted for being small and perfectly balanced, with light, well-matched shari (sushi rice) that showcases the chef's exacting technique. The experience is typically one seating per night, though occasional weekend lunch services are offered. A unique and celebrated finale is the extensive tasting of rare mikan (orange) juices, a nod to the owner's roots in Ehime Prefecture.

This level of craft comes at a price. The omakase course, before drinks or any extras, was reported by reviewers in 2024 to be around ¥33,000–¥38,500. Total bills frequently reached ¥41,000–¥44,000 with additions like extra nigiri or sake pairings. One guest recorded a ¥38,500 course rising to ¥44,000 with extras. While the cost is high, most diners feel the exceptional ingredients, technical polish, and unique atmosphere provide excellent value for a special-occasion meal.

The primary challenge is securing a seat. Bookings are notoriously difficult, often requiring a lead time of one to two years. For travellers, this means planning far in advance or visiting with a regular contact.

  • Booking: Reservation is mandatory and must be made far in advance, often a year or more. This is not a walk-in establishment.
  • Getting There: The restaurant is a short walk from Kuramaguchi Station.
  • Seating: A single counter with 6 seats. There are no private rooms.
  • Payment: Credit cards are accepted. Electronic money and QR code payments are not.
  • Smoking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
  • Parking: No parking is available.
