Torinago (鳥名子) is a destination for diners across Japan, drawing crowds to the city of Fukuchiyama for a single, iconic dish: 鴨すき (kamo-suki). This is a unique hotpot experience centered on a clear, umami-rich house stock. Guests cook paper-thin slices of duck and a generous mound of finely shredded white leek (negi) for just a few seconds before eating. The combination of the fatty duck, the sweet, sharp leek, and the elegant broth is what nearly every visitor praises.

While the kamo-suki is the main event, the large and juicy 唐揚げ (karaage, or fried chicken) is a very popular side order. To finish the meal, guests choose between adding handcrafted soba noodles or rice to the remaining broth to make a comforting 雑炊 (zosui) porridge. Reviewers consistently describe the staff as friendly and the atmosphere as warm and lively, making the meal a satisfying ritual worth travelling for.

The restaurant's popularity is its main practical challenge. It often fills up, and the kamo-suki can sell out before closing, so booking ahead is essential. A few reviewers noted that some drinks were expensive, but most agree the signature meal offers excellent value. Dinner typically costs between ¥6,000 and ¥8,000 per person. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥6,000–¥6,300 for a two-person kamo-suki set. The 〆蕎麦 (shime-soba) finisher costs about ¥700, while the zosui is ¥300. Other small dishes like 親子刺し (oyako-sashi) are around ¥900.

  • Reservations: Booking by phone is strongly recommended. It is advisable to pre-order the kamo-suki when you book, as it can sell out.
  • Getting There: The restaurant is located in a residential-style building, about a 10-minute walk or 3-minute taxi ride from JR Fukuchiyama Station.
  • Payment: Credit cards (VISA, Master, JCB, AMEX) and cash are accepted. Electronic money and QR code payments are not.
  • Language: An English menu is not guaranteed. It is helpful to have the name of the signature dish, kamo-suki (鴨すき), ready to show staff.
  • Seating: The restaurant has 120 seats, mostly tatami and sunken kotatsu-style seating. The second floor can accommodate large groups.
  • Smoking: Please be aware that smoking is permitted throughout the restaurant.
  • Parking: Free parking is available for 20 cars, with a paid car park also located one minute away on foot.
