Tsukimura (月村) is a small, traditional Kyoto establishment run by an older couple, dedicated to the art of kamameshi—rice cooked to order in an individual iron pot. The process is slow, but it results in exceptionally moist, flavourful rice infused with strong dashi and finished with a prized scorched bottom crust known as okoge.

Guests consistently praise the quality of the cooking. The chicken (tori) and seasonal oyster (kaki) kamameshi are frequently called out as exceptional. While waiting for the main dish, which can take 30 to 60 minutes, many enjoy the excellent small plates, such as the homemade shumai dumplings and simmered daikon radish.

However, visitors should be aware of significant drawbacks. Several reviewers report brusque or cold service, and more concerningly, there are recurring accounts from recent years of non-Japanese speaking or foreign guests being refused entry. The long wait times and very limited seating also detract from the experience for some. A typical dinner costs between ¥8,000 and ¥9,999. Reviewers in 2023–2026 noted paying around ¥2,450 for the chicken kamameshi, ¥2,850–¥2,900 for other seasonal versions, and ¥750 for a bottle of beer. For those focused purely on high-quality kamameshi, the price is often seen as justified, but it is not a good choice for diners who are short on time or expect welcoming service.

  • Getting There: Tsukimura is a 3-minute walk from Hankyu Kawaramachi Station.
  • Reservations: Reservations are not accepted. Queues are common, and arriving before the 5:00 PM opening time is recommended to secure a seat.
  • Service & Language: Be aware that there are multiple reports of the restaurant refusing service to foreign guests or those who do not speak Japanese. The menu is often only available on a wall display in Japanese.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Seating: There are only 17 seats, including a small counter and a few tables.
  • Smoking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
  • Parking: No parking is available.
