Yamamoto Mambo (山本まんぼ) is a Kyoto institution, famous as the birthplace of a unique local dish: manbo-yaki. Unlike okonomiyaki, manbo-yaki starts with a thin, crepe-like batter layered on the teppan grill with your choice of soba or udon noodles, meat or seafood, and an egg cooked to your liking. It's all brought together with a distinctive sweet and spicy sauce and cooked right in front of you at the counter.
Guests consistently praise the signature manbo-yaki, especially the charred, crispy edges of the noodles, as well as the simpler beta-yaki. The menu also features well-regarded side dishes like grilled horumon (offal) and stewed beef tendon. The live theatre of the teppan cooking, combined with friendly and accommodating staff, makes for a memorable experience. Many reviewers, both Japanese and international, highlight the restaurant as excellent value for its flavour and history.
There are a few things to be prepared for. The small room is often filled with cooking smoke from the teppan, which can make the air feel stuffy and leave a smell on your clothes. Some diners also find the portions to be on the small side, so you may want to order an extra dish if you're very hungry. When choosing your sauce, be aware that the '辛' (spicy) option is reported to be very hot.
Expect to spend around ¥1,000–¥1,999 for both lunch and dinner. Reviewers recently paid around ¥1,300 for a special manbo-yaki with all toppings, ¥1,200 for a similar beta-yaki, and ¥600 for an order of horumon. A meal for two with drinks often comes to around ¥3,300.
