In a renovated 180-year-old Kyoto townhouse, or kyomachiya, Yokoi (よこい) offers a tightly judged seasonal kaiseki menu from behind a beautiful 10-seat curved counter. The experience is intimate and focused on the chef's precise work, which often includes showpieces like hand-rolled sushi with tuna, sea urchin and squid, and theatrical finishers that guests consistently remember.
Reviewers praise the fresh, balanced seasonal ingredients and the kitchen's precise timing. Inventive pairings are a highlight, with guests mentioning dishes like chawanmushi topped with caviar, or charcoal-grilled kinmedai (splendid alfonsino). The warm, relaxed service from the chef and the okami (hostess) receives consistent praise, as do the thoughtful sake pairings. Portions are considered generous, and many guests leave feeling very satisfied, particularly with the memorable final rice course, which might be a rich beef-and-egg donburi or a delicate crab-soup ramen.
While overwhelmingly positive, a small number of reviews note occasional lapses. These include slow pacing at the start of the meal and a few courses that felt less distinct than others. Some who opted for a very expensive seasonal crab special (around ¥55,000) felt it offered less value than the excellent standard omakase menu.
Most diners, however, consider the regular courses excellent value for the quality. Typical spend is ¥15,000–¥19,999 for lunch and ¥20,000–¥29,999 for dinner. Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥27,500 for the dinner omakase and ¥16,500–¥17,000 for lunch courses.
