With a history stretching back over 200 years, Sakurai Kanseido Honten (桜井甘精堂 本店) is an institution in the small town of Obuse, a place synonymous with chestnuts. This shop has built its reputation on celebrating the pure, unadulterated flavour of this local specialty. Many of their flagship sweets, like the Hitokuchi Kuri Yokan (a dense, bite-sized chestnut jelly) and Kuri Dorayaki (a pancake filled with chunky chestnut paste), are made with little more than chestnuts and sugar, allowing the deep, natural taste to shine through.
Visitors consistently praise this commitment to quality. Across the product line—from the chestnut soft-serve ice cream to the Marron Chou cream puffs and mochi-like Mikazuki—the flavour is described as rich and authentic. The attractive packaging also makes their products a reliable and popular choice for souvenirs (omiyage). Criticisms are few and far between; some found the soba noodles at an affiliated on-site eatery to be inconsistent, and popular seasonal items, especially those using the new-harvest chestnuts, are known to sell out very early in the day.
Prices are considered reasonable for the quality. Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥270 for a Kuri Dorayaki, ¥330 for a Marron Chou cream puff, and ¥600 for the Mont Blanc soft-serve. A five-piece box of the seasonal Shin-Kuri Chakin-shibori was about ¥1,500. Most visitors spend between ¥1,000 and ¥2,000 for takeaway sweets or a light snack in the small eat-in area.
