Yama Botan breaks with the usual dark, crunchy cutlet. The pork is fried three times at low temperature in rice oil, under crumbs made from crustless bread. The result is a pale cream crust and a thick, blush-pink centre. The loin is Iwachu pork from Iwate, and the fillet is sold as pork 'chateaubriand'. The restaurant appears in Tabelog's Tonkatsu 100 for 2022 and 2026, and window seats look over Lake Suwa.

Most reviewers praise how tender and moist the meat stays, even in very thick cuts, and many find it surprisingly light for its size. Part of the fun is the condiment tray of salts, wasabi, mustard and sauces, and salt is the favourite. The miso soup with wood-ear mushroom and fried tofu gets repeated praise, as do the rice and side dishes. Portions are generous. Even the 'small' sets are normal-sized, and the sauce katsudon is huge. Staff are often described as kind, including with children.

The style divides opinion. Several reviewers found the crust damp or soggy, the loin fat heavy after a few slices, or the rare-leaning centre not to their taste. The fatty toro loin overwhelmed some diners. Others found the prices steep for a place where tea and water are self-service. There was one report of cold rice and one of subdued staff.

Between 2024 and 2026, reviewers paid ¥3,200–3,300 for the 200g loin set, ¥3,740–3,960 for the loin-and-fillet set and ¥4,180 for the limited 'kiwami' loin-and-fillet set. They paid ¥2,310 for the small loin set and ¥2,860 for the toro-loin sauce katsudon. A typical lunch comes to about ¥3,000–4,000. You can choose your rice size for free, but cabbage and rice refills cost extra. No dinner prices are documented, since evening service is suspended.

Most reviewers think the quality and volume justify the price, and one reckons the same meal would cost ¥1,000 more in Tokyo. If you prefer classic crunchy tonkatsu, it may feel like poor value.

  • Getting there: about 1 km from Glass Village towards Okaya and roughly 3.9 km from Okaya Station. Buses are infrequent, so a car or taxi is easiest. There is a large free car park.

  • Seats: 17 seats, tables for 1–3 people only. Groups are limited to 3, and there are no private rooms.
