Chinese Sai Naramachi Kuko (枸杞) is a destination restaurant in Nara that has earned a devoted following for its singular approach to Chinese cuisine. The chef operates under the philosophy of 'ishoku dōgen'—the idea of food as medicine—fusing classical Chinese techniques with vegetables grown on the restaurant's own farm and other carefully sourced Nara-area ingredients. The result is a refined, nourishing meal that feels both traditional and unique to its location.
Guests consistently praise the extensive dim sum (點心) selection, which is the star of the show. Standouts include delicate xiao long bao filled with local Yamato pork, crispy-chewy fried glutinous rice dumplings (咸水角), and a variety of steamed dumplings and shumai. The nourishing herbal soups (養生湯菜) are also a highlight, as are the special 'Kuko Socha' (枸杞捜茶) events, which feature an elaborate multi-course meal paired with rare and seasonal teas. While the experience is overwhelmingly positive, a few diners have noted minor flavour repetition across some courses.
The main challenge is securing a seat. This is a 'hideout' restaurant with an undisclosed address, and bookings are handled via a highly competitive lottery. For lunch, reviewers recently paid around ¥7,000 for the dim sum course, with an optional mapo tofu for an additional ¥2,000. Dinner is a more elaborate affair, with prices ranging from ¥20,000 to ¥30,000. While expensive, most find the cost justified by the quality of the ingredients and the unique experience.
