Dango Sho Honten (だんご庄 本店) has built its reputation on a single product: kinako dango. For over a century, this shop in Kashihara has focused on perfecting its five-ball skewers of soft, slightly chewy mochi, coated in a secret-recipe syrup and a generous layer of freshly roasted soybean flour (kinako). The dango are made to be eaten the same day they are purchased, ensuring a perfect texture that has earned a devoted following among locals.
Guests consistently praise the addictive quality of the dango, noting the ideal balance between the sweet syrup and the nutty, fragrant kinako. Many find themselves eating several skewers in one sitting. While primarily a takeaway spot, there is a small area to sit and enjoy the dango with tea. In summer, the shop also serves a popular shaved ice dessert (kakigori) topped with its signature syrup, which comes with a dango skewer and warm tea.
The value is considered outstanding. Reviewers in 2024 paid around ¥100–¥110 per skewer, with a box of five costing ¥550. The seasonal kakigori was reported at about ¥800–¥880. The main drawbacks are practical: the dango sell out, often by early afternoon, and must be eaten the same day. The shop and its approach road are narrow, and seating is very limited, leading to queues.
- Getting There: The shop is a short walk (155m) from Bojo Station.
- Booking: Walk-ins are standard, but expect to queue, especially for the seasonal kakigori. A buzzer system is used during busy periods. While the shop accepts reservations, dropping in is the norm.
- Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
- Seating: A few small tables are available for eating in. No private rooms.
- Good to Know: The dango have a one-day shelf life and are best eaten immediately. The shop may close early if sold out. Parking is available opposite the store but fills up quickly.
