Izumo Soba Dandan (出雲そば だんだん) is a small, charming restaurant in Nara run by a mother and daughter team, dedicated to the craft of Izumo-style soba. The noodles are made in-house from 100% buckwheat flour, known as 'ten-wari', which gives them a distinctive dark colour, firm texture, and rich aroma that guests consistently praise. By day, the restaurant serves soba sets, while at night it transforms into an intimate omakase experience focused on seasonal ingredients from Shimane prefecture.

Reviewers love the quality of the food, from the handmade noodles to the exceptionally light and crisp tempura, which is fried to order and served in stages to ensure it arrives hot. The dinner omakase is noted for its creative and gently flavoured small dishes, such as miso-aged tofu and specialties featuring Shimane seafood. The experience is complemented by a wide selection of sakes from both Shimane and Nara, and the warm, personal hospitality from the owners, who are often able to assist guests in English.

The restaurant's small size and dedication to craft mean service can be slow and methodical. Guests should be prepared for a leisurely meal, as courses can be spaced out. Seating is limited and the restaurant often sells out, so booking is essential. Some reviewers also note quirks like fixed start times for certain meals and preferential treatment for regular customers.

For lunch, reviewers recently paid around ¥1,890 for the standard set with tempura and soba (天ぷら付き十割割子そば), with a more extensive lunch omakase costing about ¥5,500. The evening omakase courses typically range from ¥8,800 to ¥10,000. Most find it offers good value for the high quality of ingredients and craftsmanship.

  • Booking: Reservations are strongly recommended for both lunch and dinner, as seats are limited and often sell out. Dinner is course-only and may have a fixed start time of 6:30 PM.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Access: A 4-minute walk from JR Nara Station or a 7-minute walk from Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station.
  • Seating: 15 table seats. There are no private rooms.
  • Language: The menu is in Japanese, but staff can often provide help in English.
  • Smoking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
  • Parking: Three free parking spaces are available in front of the restaurant.
