Nakatani Do (中谷堂) is less a shop and more a street-side spectacle. Its fame comes from one thing: kōsoku mochitsuki, a breathtakingly fast, high-speed pounding of glutinous rice to make mochi. Two masters, in perfect, lightning-fast sync, hammer the steaming rice in a large stone mortar, creating a performance that draws crowds throughout the day.

The resulting product is the shop's only specialty: yomogi daifuku, a mugwort-infused mochi filled with a lightly sweet red bean (anko) paste and dusted with nutty roasted soybean flour (kinako). Reviewers consistently praise the mochi's extraordinary texture when fresh — warm, pillowy, and incredibly stretchy. The subtle flavour of the mugwort, the balanced sweetness of the filling, and the fast-moving queue are all frequent points of praise.

The experience is not without its trade-offs. The shop is extremely popular and can get very crowded, especially during a pounding session. The schedule for these performances is unpredictable, so you may miss the show. Some visitors also report feeling rushed by the brisk service or, on rare occasions, receiving mochi that was not freshly made and lacked the signature texture.

Despite this, the consensus is that Nakatani Do offers excellent value. Reviewers in recent years paid around ¥200 for a single mochi, or about ¥600 for a set of three to take away. For a live performance and a handmade local specialty, it's considered a bargain.

  • Getting There: Nakatani Do is a 3-minute walk from exit 2 or 3 of Kintetsu Nara Station.
  • Booking: Walk-ins are the norm. Bookings are not necessary, but expect to queue, especially when a pounding performance is underway.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • The Show: The high-speed mochi pounding happens irregularly throughout the day based on demand. To see it, you can ask staff at the store when the next session is planned.
  • Service: This is a takeaway-only stall. The mochi has a short shelf life and is best eaten fresh on the same day.
  • Families: Children of all ages are welcome.
  • Parking: No parking is available.
