In a renovated traditional house (machiya) in Nara, Sake to Sakana Nakamura (酒と肴 なかむら) applies an unmistakable chef’s touch to izakaya fare. The concept is simple but brilliantly executed: classic Japanese small plates are infused with the complex aromatics of Indian spices, creating a menu that feels intentional and unique, not gimmicky.

The signature dish, praised by nearly every visitor, is the masala oden, where traditional simmered ingredients are finished in a fragrant curry broth. Other consistent favourites include the spice-skewer sets (with chicken, heart, and lamb), the garam-masala karaage (fried chicken), a torch-finished corn fritter, and a surprisingly bold potato salad. The experience is complemented by a well-chosen list of local sake and craft beer.

While most international visitors find the staff patient, a few have reported curt service. The menu is in Japanese only, so a translation app is essential. Some guests also note that certain dishes can be a little salty, or that the spice levels are more subtle than expected. Dinner typically costs between ¥3,000 and ¥3,999. Reviewers recently paid ¥1,300 for a five-item masala oden set, around ¥1,310 for spice skewers, and ¥490 for two pieces of garam-masala karaage. For its inventive, well-made food, most consider it excellent value.
