Yoshoku Katsui (洋食勝井) is a countryside outpost of a respected Osaka culinary family, bringing polished execution to the comforting classics of yōshoku—Japanese-style Western food. Located within the Tenri City Trail Center in Nara, it has earned a reputation for turning familiar dishes into destination-worthy plates.

The star of the menu, praised consistently by guests, is the ebi fry: whole, head-on shrimp, fried so perfectly that they can be eaten from head to tail. Reviewers recently paid around ¥400 for a single piece or ¥2,400 for a five-piece set. Also popular are the large ‘market salads’, which pair fresh vegetables with high-quality proteins like roast beef or salmon, with recent prices around ¥2,600. Beef dishes, including grilled wagyu and cold roast beef sets, were noted at ¥2,600–¥2,800. For a typical meal, expect to spend ¥1,000–¥1,999 for lunch and ¥4,000–¥4,999 for dinner.

While most diners find the generous portions and careful cooking to be good value, some have noted service can be slow or distracted during peak hours. The restaurant is very popular, leading to queues, and there are isolated but recurring reports of inconsistent dishes or poor service. These appear to be exceptions rather than the rule.

  • Reservations: Booking is recommended, as waits are common, especially on weekends. Lunch courses require a reservation, but à la carte walk-ins are possible if you're prepared to queue.
  • Getting There: The restaurant is a 10 to 15-minute walk from Yanagimoto Station on the JR Manyo Mahoroba Line. Access by car is easier, though the shared car park has limited space.
  • Payment: Major credit cards (VISA, Master, JCB, AMEX, Diners) and PayPay are accepted. Electronic money is not.
  • Seating: There are no private rooms.
  • Practical Notes: The lunch menu and prices are only available until 2:00 PM. The restaurant is entirely non-smoking. Parking is available on-site.
