A local institution on Okinawa and a regular on Japan's 'best-of' lists, Captain Kangaroo (キャプテンカンガルー) serves big, messy, American-style burgers designed to be a handful. The focus is on loud, juicy flavours, with generously sized patties and buns that are consistently praised for being perfectly toasted on the outside while remaining soft and fluffy within.
The two standout creations that draw crowds are the Sparky Burger, which gets a kick from a pile of crispy fried onions, and the Special Burger, balanced with a tangy tartar sauce and pickled vegetables. Guests love the juicy patties, the well-constructed burgers, and the generous portions. Good milkshakes and an upbeat, American-diner atmosphere complete the experience, with many reviewers stating it's well worth the wait.
The main drawback is that wait. Queues are common, with peak times often involving a 30- to 60-minute wait. A minority of diners also report slow or chaotic service at the counter, and some find the burgers a touch too salty or rich for their taste. The fries are sometimes described as ordinary frozen ones.
Reviewers in recent years paid around ¥1,600 for the Sparky Burger and ¥1,300–¥1,400 for the Special Burger. The typical spend for lunch or dinner is between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999, which most find to be excellent value for the size and quality of the burgers.
