Founded in 1905 and often called Okinawa's oldest soba shop, Kishimoto Shokudo still makes its own noodles with wood-ash lye rather than commercial alkaline water. The result is a firm, slightly smoky, rustic noodle that most Okinawa soba shops no longer make. The menu is short: soba in two sizes and juushii, seasoned rice cooked with pork and vegetables.
The broth draws the most consistent praise. It is clear and deep, built on bonito and pork, and several diners say they drank every drop. The thick, sweet-savoury slices of braised pork belly (sanmainiku) are also widely liked. Many diners call the juushii the best they have had, and some Japanese reviewers rate it as this shop's highlight. English-language reviews often call it 'fried rice', but it is cooked seasoned rice. Families appreciate the tatami seating, child chairs and child utensils.
The noodles divide opinion. Some visitors find them hard or crumbly, while fans say that firmness is the traditional style. Some diners found the pork tough or dry, others describe the staff as brusque, and a few feel the bowl does not justify a long queue.
Reviewers in 2026 paid around ¥950 for small soba, ¥1,100 for large soba and ¥350 for juushii. A full meal typically costs ¥1,100–1,500, and lunch and later-day visits cost the same.
Value is fair for a famous century-old shop, though regulars remember the soba costing ¥650. Order the large: reviewers say the small is a child's portion.
- Booking: reservations are not accepted. Walk in and join the queue.
- Queue: expect 10–60 minutes outdoors at peak times. People line up before the 11:00 opening, so bring a sun or rain umbrella.
- Sell-outs: juushii is limited to 50 a day and usually goes by noon or early afternoon. Soba can sell out by late afternoon, and one late arrival at 16:16 was turned away.
- Getting there: by car, take the Okinawa Expressway to Kyoda IC, then National Route 58 and Prefectural Route 84, about 23 km towards Motobu. It is a short drive from Churaumi Aquarium.
- Parking: three nearby lots, with a guide map posted in front of the shop.
- Payment: cash only. Credit cards, electronic money and QR payments are not accepted. Recent reviewers paid after eating.
- Seats: 35 seats, with 16 at tables and 19 on tatami. There are no private rooms, so groups of five or more wait longer.
