Gomenne JIRO (ゴメンネJIRO) is a legendary one-man operation in Osaka serving yoshoku — Japanese-style Western food — of a quality that belies its remarkably low prices. The owner works alone in an open kitchen, turning out a succession of perfectly timed hot dishes for a small audience of diners. It’s a performance that has earned the restaurant a spot in the Tabelog Top 100 Restaurants for its category year after year.
Guests consistently praise the incredible cost performance. The menu features classics executed with precision. Standouts include the white fish with uni (sea urchin) sauce, a rich and delicate dish reviewers recently paid around ¥480 for. Other favourites are the hamburger steak (≈¥800), the assorted appetiser plate (zenzai moriawase, ≈¥580), and the crispy fried burdock root (≈¥350). The menu also offers small “chotto” portions, like three fried shrimp for about ¥280, allowing diners to sample widely. A typical meal with drinks costs between ¥3,000 and ¥4,000.
The trade-off for this value is a set of famously strict house rules. The booking process is a scramble, requiring a phone call at 10:00 AM on the day you wish to dine, with a low chance of success. The owner can be abrupt, and the small room gets crowded and permits smoking. Most importantly, the restaurant does not accept solo diners or children, and has been known to turn away groups that don't fit its seating plan.
