Hontori Hisa (本鳥久) is a long-standing, family-run izakaya in Osaka's Nishinari ward with a singular focus: exceptionally fresh chicken. The restaurant sources its own Ise Red chicken and Kawachi duck, allowing it to serve parts so fresh they can be eaten raw—a delicacy known as chicken sashimi (tori-sashi).

The star of the menu, praised by local and international visitors alike, is the weekend-only Tori-sashi Special Don. This rice bowl features multiple rare cuts of raw chicken, described as sweet, pink, and texturally unique, topped with a rich, golden kinkan (unfertilized egg yolk). Reviewers consistently call it a fantastic value, with recent diners paying around ¥1,000–¥1,100. Other popular lunch items include the standard Tori-sashi Don (around ¥700) and the Tori Yukke Don (seasoned raw chicken, ~¥750). Evening diners praise the 15-piece sashimi platter and an extensive list of sake and shōchū selected to pair with the food.

Be aware that this is a small establishment with limited seating. The raw chicken dishes are its main draw and often sell out early in the service, so it's best to arrive right at opening. Staff will also confirm that you understand and accept the potential health risks of consuming raw poultry. For a typical dinner, expect to spend around ¥4,000–¥4,999.

  • Getting There: A very short walk (around 60 meters) from Hanazonocho Station.
  • Reservations: Recommended for dinner, and essential if you want to order the large 15-piece sashimi platter. For lunch, walk-ins are possible, but arrive early to avoid disappointment.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Language: Staff have limited English, but many non-Japanese visitors have managed successfully.
  • Seating: The space is small, with counter seats and a few tables. There are no private rooms.
  • Smoking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
  • Parking: No dedicated parking, but paid lots are available nearby.
