IAKU (IAKU) offers a theatrical dining experience from a single chef at an intimate, L-shaped counter in Osaka’s Kita-Shinchi district. The performance begins with the restaurant's signature first bite: a perfectly fried black wagyu fillet katsu roll. What follows is a 9- to 11-course tasting menu that crosses French, Italian, and Japanese boundaries, showcasing premium ingredients in creative combinations.
Guests consistently praise the opening katsu roll as a highlight. Other frequently lauded dishes include a tartare of tuna, caviar, and sea urchin (uni); a rich chawan-mushi, often with uni or crab; and expertly roasted wagyu, sometimes served with shaved truffle. The meal often concludes with a claypot rice (donabe) dish, such as corn and seafood, and dramatic desserts like a whole poached peach. Many reviewers also compliment the well-chosen wine pairings that accompany the meal.
While overwhelmingly positive, a few recurring minor critiques appear. Some diners found certain dishes to be on the salty side, and a few noted that fried items or pasta were not served piping hot. The single-start time for all guests can also make the service feel brisk to some.
Reviewers in 2024 reported paying around ¥13,200 for the lunch tasting menu and ¥22,000 for the standard dinner course. The typical total spend for dinner is between ¥20,000 and ¥29,999. A popular Basque cheesecake is available for takeaway, with prices reported between ¥1,600 and ¥3,240. Most guests feel the cost is justified by the quality of ingredients and the unique, chef-led experience, making it a worthwhile choice for a special occasion.
