Kadoya (角屋) is a classic Japanese sweet shop in Osaka that feels like a step back in time. It’s famous for one thing: serving enormous sundaes and kakigōri (shaved ice) at remarkably low prices. Many desserts hide generous fillings of house-made ingredients like chewy shiratama mochi balls, sweet red bean paste (anko), and even whole puddings buried beneath mountains of soft-serve ice cream or shaved ice.
Guests consistently praise the incredible portion-to-price ratio and the nostalgic flavours. Popular choices include the Matcha Ogura Shiratama Soft (matcha sundae with red beans and mochi), the vast Kōri Uji Kintoki (matcha and red bean shaved ice), and the Pudding Soft, which features a crème caramel-style pudding. The light, slightly icy texture of the soft-serve and the quality of the shiratama are frequent highlights. The shop also sells seasonal items like crisp ice-monaka (ice cream wafers) in summer and warm kaiten-yaki (a dorayaki-like cake) in winter.
The experience is decidedly old-school, and some visitors find the service brusque or unfriendly. Staff have been known to scold guests for taking photos, and the paper-slip ordering system can be confusing. However, most agree that the quality and quantity of the sweets more than justify a visit.
The value is considered almost unanimous. Reviewers recently paid around ¥450 for a Matcha Ogura Shiratama Soft sundae, between ¥330 and ¥540 for a large Kōri Uji Kintoki, and just ¥90 for a kaiten-yaki. Most sundaes and shaved ice desserts are in the ¥300–¥600 range, with a typical spend under ¥1,000.
