kyoumachi bori nakamura (京町堀 なかむら) elevates the humble tonkatsu to the level of high cuisine with its omakase-style tasting menu. At this intimate 12-seat counter, the experience is akin to a sushi bar: the chef prepares and serves each piece directly to you. The specialty is a unique low-temperature frying method, followed by a resting period, which produces an incredibly light, non-greasy crust and pork that remains strikingly pink, tender, and juicy.
Guests consistently praise the opportunity to sample and compare several high-end, branded pork varieties like TOKYO X and Berkshire50 in a single meal, noting the clear differences in flavour and texture. The chef's precise control over the cooking process is a frequent highlight. Beyond the pork, diners also rave about the truffle-dressed salad and the theatrical finale: a choice between a rich katsu-don or a flavourful menchi-katsu curry. For a small fee, you can even have both.
While overwhelmingly lauded, a few points are worth noting. The house-made sauce is described by some as quite sweet, and a handful of international visitors wished for more detailed English explanations of the specific pork cuts. The biggest challenge, however, is securing a seat due to extremely high demand.
Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥6,600 for the lunch course and between ¥8,800 and ¥9,900 for dinner. Adding extras like an ebi-fry (fried prawn, ~¥900) or ordering both final dishes (+¥800) can bring the total to ¥12,000 or more with drinks. Despite the cost, the vast majority of diners feel the exceptional quality and unique experience offer excellent value, making it a worthy splurge for tonkatsu lovers.
