Matsuyamachi Seiten is an intimate seven-seat counter in Osaka that offers two distinct, world-class dining experiences depending on the season. From November to March, it transforms into a temple for crab lovers, serving a luxurious omakase dedicated to premium Matsuba crab from the Hamazaka port. The rest of the year, the focus shifts to a tempura omakase, showcasing exceptional ingredients and masterful technique.

Guests consistently praise the sheer quality of the ingredients and the precision of the cooking. The winter crab course is a showstopper, with each diner receiving an entire crab prepared in a sequence of dishes, from sashimi and grilled preparations to a rich crab-miso cheese risotto. The tempura is equally lauded for its impossibly thin, airy batter that shatters on contact, perfectly cooking everything from oversized broccoli to prime shellfish and fish like tachiuo (beltfish). The engaging service from the chef behind the counter makes the meal feel personal and memorable.

Criticism is rare and almost never concerns the food. Instead, reviewers note the high cost and extreme difficulty of securing a reservation. The restaurant operates with a single, simultaneous start time for all guests, and seats are often booked out months in advance.

This is a true special-occasion restaurant. The tempura course is priced around ¥25,500, while the winter Matsuba crab course starts at ¥73,500 and can fluctuate with the daily market price. Reviewers agree that for a celebratory splurge, the quality and unique experience justify the expense.

  • Booking: Reservations are essential and must be made at least one month in advance. Securing a seat, especially during crab season, can be very difficult for new customers. Walk-ins are not accepted.
  • Getting There: Located in Zaimokucho, a 5-minute walk from Sakaisuji-Hommachi Station.
  • Seating: There are only 7 seats at the counter. Service begins for all guests at a fixed time (12:00 for lunch during crab season, 18:00 for dinner).
  • Payment: Credit cards (Visa, Master, AMEX, Diners) are accepted. JCB cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not. A 5% service charge is added to the bill.
  • Children: Children are permitted, but there is no children's menu; they are served the full adult course at the full price.
  • Dress Code: Smart casual. Extremely casual clothing and sandals are not permitted.
  • Smoking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
