Tatsunami Ichiban (立浪一番) is a local legend, a restaurant that has perfected a single dish: a magnificent chanko nabe (a sumo wrestler's hotpot) called the Yokozuna Kinboshi Nabe (横綱金星鍋). The experience is as much theatre as it is dinner. Staff take full control, cooking each ingredient for you at the table and telling you the precise moment to eat it. The meal unfolds in stages, with the dashi broth deepening in flavour as enormous clams, prawns, octopus, chicken, and vegetables are added and served.

Diners consistently praise the rich, evolving broth and the quality of the ingredients, especially the house-made sardine tsukune (meatballs). Other highlights include the addictive fried tofu puffs (matsuyama-age) and the satisfying finale of either gooey mochi and udon noodles or a savoury zōsui rice porridge cooked in the remaining broth. The strict rules, however, are a recurring theme. The restaurant enforces a 60-minute time limit and a cap of two drinks per person, and requires a reservation call just 30 minutes before arrival. While most regulars embrace this as part of the unique experience, some first-time visitors find it rushed. A few also note the broth can become very salty by the end, and isolated reports mention hygiene concerns over staff handling ingredients with bare hands.

Despite the rules, most reviewers consider it excellent value. Diners in 2024–2026 reported paying around ¥3,800–¥3,850 for the hotpot set. Add-ons like matsuyama-age cost about ¥400, and the final zōsui course was ¥495–¥550. A typical meal with drinks came to ¥5,000–¥6,000 per person.

  • Booking: Reservations are mandatory and can only be made by phone about 30 minutes before you plan to arrive. Walk-ins are only possible if there happens to be a free table, which is rare.
  • Getting There: A 3-minute walk from Shonai Station on the Hankyu Line.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Rules: There is a strict 60-minute dining limit and a maximum of two drinks per person.
  • Seating: The restaurant has counter seating and a tatami room. There are no private rooms.
  • Practical Notes: The restaurant is entirely non-smoking. Takeaway is available. There is no dedicated parking, but paid lots are available nearby. Be aware that staff may handle food with bare hands.
