Hidden on the third floor of a building on the Kinki University campus is one of Osaka's most unusual sushi experiences. THE LOUNGE (ザ ラウンジ) houses a tiny, four-to-six-seat sushi counter known as Kindai (近鮨), which serves only one private party per seating. The experience is highly personalized and exclusive, beginning with a few small starters before the main event: a wooden 'neta' box filled with premium seafood, which guests enjoy until the box is empty.

The main draw is the exceptional quality of the fish, much of which is famously farmed by Kinki University itself. Reviewers consistently praise the Kinki-farmed bluefin tuna (近大マグロ), sea bream (近大鯛), striped jack (縞鯵), and amberjack (カンパチ). The chef's playful and accommodating service is another highlight, with guests able to request custom preparations like hand rolls or grilled items. Other frequently mentioned favorites include sea urchin (uni), salmon roe (ikura), and, when in season, Ise-ebi lobster.

While the experience is unique, it comes with significant hurdles. The location on the sprawling university campus is notoriously difficult to find. More importantly, securing a reservation is extremely challenging, with many reviewers reporting waits of one to three years, and some gaining access only through an introduction. A minority of diners with a preference for classical Edomae-style sushi find the technique and vinegared rice here less traditional, and feel the value proposition is middling for them.

Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported the fixed dinner course cost between ¥15,000 and ¥16,500 per person, with drinks billed separately. Most consider this good value for the sheer abundance of high-quality seafood and the highly entertaining, private counter experience.

  • Booking: Strictly by reservation only, which must be made far in advance (often years). The entire counter is booked for a single private party of 4 to 6 people.
  • Getting There: Located on the 3rd floor of Building 4 on the Kinki University Higashiosaka campus. It is about an 880-meter walk from Nagase Station. Be prepared for difficulty finding the restaurant on campus.
  • Seating: A very small counter for one private group. The space is intimate and not spacious.
  • Payment: Accepts JCB and AMEX credit cards, as well as QR code payments. Electronic money is not accepted.
  • Smoking: The entire restaurant is non-smoking.
  • Parking: No parking is available.
