For over 50 years, Yakiniku Katsuragi (焼肉かつらぎ) has been a local institution in Sakai, serving high-quality Japanese barbecue in a lively, no-frills setting. The restaurant is tiny, with just ten seats at a counter, creating an intimate and energetic atmosphere that is also famously smoky.

The main event is the chateaubriand, a huge cut of beef that staff cook for you at your grill, complete with a dramatic flambé finish before it's sliced and served. While it's a splurge—reviewers report paying around ¥15,000 for a 300g portion—most agree it's worth it for the spectacle and tender flavour. Other consistently praised dishes include the unusually thick-cut tanmoto (tongue root, ~¥2,200) and harami (skirt steak, ~¥1,980), as well as fresh offal like nama senmai (raw tripe, ~¥1,100). All are served with a rich, sweet-and-garlicky house tare sauce that many guests find addictive.

While the chateaubriand can significantly raise the bill, Yakiniku Katsuragi offers excellent value if you stick to the standard cuts. Many diners report satisfying meals for ¥5,000–¥6,000 per person. With the chateaubriand, expect the check to be closer to ¥8,000–¥15,000. The main drawbacks noted by visitors are the cramped seating and the heavy smoke, which will linger on clothes and hair.
